N.Y. Times Building - 19th Century
Undated photograph of the old NY Times Building in the 19th century, originally photo in stereographic form, facing Printing House Square. Nassau Street is on the left, Park Row is on the right and the steeple of St. Paul's Chapel can be seen on the right. Source: New York Public Library.
This building existed from 1858 to 1888, then it was rebuilt to a new 13-story building. This photograph was taken before 1872, when the Benjamin Franklin Monument was unveiled (not here). The building housed the Surrogate's Office since 1858 until 1865 or later.
The journalist and politician Henry Jarvis Raymond (1820-1869), was the first editor of the New York Times. He worked for various New York City papers before founding the New-York Daily Times (renamed the New-York Times in 1857) in 1851, with seven other investors.
