Times Building Publishing Office - 1859

The Publishing Office in the Times Building. Engraving on top published in the Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper on March 12, 1859. The hand-colored version below was published in the Illustrated London News.

The publishing office occupied the entire ground floor of the building, opening on three streets: Park Row, Spruce and Nassau streets. On the wall behind the counter were medallions of Faust and Franklin. Its success has been quite unprecedented in the history of newspapers in New York.

The Times Building was an impressive and tall structure for the time, equipped with new presses and machinery. The staff moved into the new headquarters on May 1, 1858. Times Building height of 80 feet above the pavement elevated it above all the surrounding buildings, until the nearby Tribune Building was completed in 1875. It was the beginning of the skyscraper era. In 1888, Times Building expanded and also became an skyscraper.
