Times Building Printing Office - 1859

The Printing Office of the Times Building at 41 Park Row. Engraving published in the Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper on March 12, 1859.

The Times Building was an impressive structure equipped with new presses and machinery. The staff moved into the new headquarters at 41 Park Row, facing Printing House Square, on May 1, 1858. Its success has been quite unprecedented in the history of newspapers in New York.

The Printing Office was a spacious room, about 60 feet by 40 feet, with a height of 20 feet. The ceiling was pierced by skylights and ventilators, opening to the roof. Every appliance of the typographic art was ready at hand for instant use. The foreman had his desk in the center. A suspended platform furnished storage room for the reception of surplus material and the proof-readers were assigned a quiet corner. The view from this room in all directions was superb. Its height of upwards of 80 feet above the pavement elevated it above all the surrounding buildings, until the nearby Tribune Building was completed in 1875.
