The Met Life Tower, on the right, was completed in 1909 and was the tallest building in the world until 1913. Union Square received its name by 1832. In 1842, a fountain was built in the center. It is home to some historic monuments, the Lincoln Monument, dedicated in 1870, and the George Washington monument, dedicated in 1856. On July 4, 1930, the Independence Flagstaff (on the right) was dedicated.
