The Empire State Building, looking north from around the 29th Street and Fifth Avenue (seen on the right). The spire of the Marble Collegiate Church can be see on the bottom of this photograph.
The plans for the record-breaking building was announced on August 29, 1929. It was built on the site of the original Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Construction of the skyscraper began on March 17, 1930 and it was formally opened on May 1, 1931.
