Bank of New York, Wall Street - 1869
Bank of New York on Wall Street, corner of William Street. Engraving published in New York illustrated by D. Appleton & Co., 1869.
The Bank of New York was founded in 1784. In 1798, the bank moved from Hanover Square to its new headquarters constructed on Wall Street, corner of William Street, which opened on April 23. Years later, during the works to widen William Street, seven feet were trimmed off the street side of the building.
The four-story brownstone and brick building, in the illustration above, was designed by Vaux and Withers, and completed in 1858. Two additional stories were built in 1880, including a mansard roof. It was demolished about 1927 to make way for the present 32-story skyscraper at 48 Wall Street.
The neoclassical Bank of America Building, on the northwest corner of William Street, is on the left. It was demolished in 1888 to make way for a new Bank of America Building.
