Wall Street - 1832
A New York view of Wall Street with larger buildings on the right and pedestrians and carriages along the street. Drawn by Charles W. Burton. Steel engraving by William Hoogland for the New York Mirror, a weekly journal, devoted to literature and the fine arts, dated January 21, 1832. Source: New York Public Library.
View from the southwest sidewalk, looking toward the East River, with the neoclassical Phenix Bank (established in 1812 as Phoenix Bank), on the right. At this time, Wall Street was occupied by the banks, insurance companies, Merchant's Exchange (building with a cupola), newspapers, and brokers’ offices, being the seat of heavier moneyed transactions than any other place in the country.
The old Bank of America and the old Bank of New York are on the left, corner of William Street.
