Buildings on Wall Street - 1890
Original title: A View of Wall Street. Engraving by A. E. Wood after drawing by Hughson Hawley, published in the Harper's New Monthly Magazine, February, 1890. On the right, the same illustration in a hand-colored version.
Illustration represents Wall Street at street level, east from near Broad Street, with carriages and pedestrians. Wall Street was transformed in the 1880s with new, taller buildings.
The building on the left adjoins the old Assay Office Building, at 32 Wall Street, built in 1824 (partially seen at the extreme left). The Bank of America is at 44 Wall Street, northwest corner of William Street, on the left. This building was erected in 1888-1889 and was demolished after 1921. Today, this site is occupied by the skyscraper 40 Wall Street.
In 1889, there were 84 chartered banks in active business in New York City, 45 were national and 39 state institutions.
