This is earliest recorded organization of securities trading in New York among brokers directly dealing with each other. Today, the NYSE trades in a continuous auction format, where traders can execute stock transactions on behalf of investors. The auction process moved toward automation in 1995 through the use of wireless handheld computers. Since 2007, all NYSE stocks can be traded via its electronic hybrid market. Customers can send orders for immediate electronic execution.
