Fifth Avenue Hotel
Fifth Avenue Hotel is located at 1 West 28th Street and 250 Fifth Avenue, New York City. It opened in 2023. The hotel is housed in two adjacent buildings: a historic office building at 250 5th Avenue, on the northwest corner of West 28th Street, and a 24-story glass tower that holds most of the hotel’s 153 guest rooms (the old office building houses 21 suites).
The 5-story office building was erected in 1908, on the site of the 19th-century four-story mansion of Mrs. Charlotte Goodridge, a leading figure in Manhattan society, demolished in the second half of 1907. The Second National Bank was housed in the old Fifth Avenue Hotel at Madison Square and the bank bought the Goodridge's mansion for its new headquarters in the Summer of 1907. Foundation works for the 5-story office building began by December 1907.
The building was designed by architectural firm McKim, Mead & White in the Italian Renaissance style. The one-story rear extension was built in the two lots behind the building. It was formerly the stables of the mansion, also demolished in 1907.
The upper floors of the Second National Bank building was rented to other companies. In 1913, the property at 252 Fifth Avenue was added to the bank's premises. In 1921, the National City Bank (later CitiBank) took over the Second National Bank. By the 1970s, Ohebshalom family acquired this historic estate. By the turn of the 21st century, the Broadway National Bank took over the CitiBank space at 250 Fifth Avenue. In 2012, Quartz Associates announced they would build a 23-story hotel above the old rear addition to the 250 Fifth Avenue building.
The 23-story skyscraper was under construction in 2018, along with the renovation of the historic building at 250 Fifth Avenue. It opened in 2023. The combined structure was developed by a new hotel chain called Flaneur Hospitality and designed by Perkins Eastman, PBDW Architects, and Martin Brudnizki Design Studio. Brudnizki gave the interiors mixed textures and jewel-toned patterns to create an atmosphere that cross between Victorian London and Belle Epoque Paris. The hotel houses the Cafe Carmellini, the restaurant overseen by the chef Andrew Carmellini, evokes the Gilded Age, the Portrait Bar.
