Booth Theatre - 1913
The original structure of Booth Theatre at 222 West 45th Street in the Times Square area. Photograph published in the Architecture magazine, November 1913, about the time the theater was completed.
Booth Theatre was built for the Shubert brothers and is operated by The Shubert Organization. The façade, lobby and auditorium were designated New York City landmarks in 1987. Shubert Theatre is adjacent, behind Booth Theatre, fronting the West 44th Street (in the background).
The Shubert and Booth theaters were designed by Henry Beaumont Herts (1871-1933) in the Italian Renaissance style, with similar arrangements. Both theaters were completed in October 1913. Booth Theatre has 800 seats across two levels. It was named after actor and theatrical manager Edwin Thomas Booth (1833-1893). The Shubert Alley, on the left, was a fire escape passage.
