Broadhurst Theatre
The Broadhurst Theatre is located at 235 West 44th Street in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in NYC. It opened on Sep tember 27, 1917, and is operated by the Shubert Organization. It has 1,218 seats across two levels. It is named after theatrical producer George Broadhurst (1866-1952), who leased the theater before its opening. Its façade and the auditorium interior were designated New York City landmarks in 1987.
Broadhurst Theatre was designed by Herbert J. Krapp (1887–1973)and was built for the Shubert brothers. In 1900, Sam, Lee and Jacob J. Shubert, moved to New York City and soon began producing shows and acquiring theatres. By 1916, the Shubert Organization had become the most important and powerful theatre owners and managers in the United States. With the success of the Shubert Theater and the Booth Theater, completed in 1913, the Shubert brothers decided to build another pair of theaters (albeit smaller ones), adjacent to the previous pair: the Broadhurst Theatre and Plymouth Theatre (now Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre). While the two playhouses are nearly identical on the outside, the Broadhurst's interior employs Doric columns, and Greek-style cornices and friezes. Its spare exterior is decorated with brickwork, enhanced by touches of stone and terra-cotta trim.
The Broadhurst's neoclassical façade is simple in design and similar to that of the Schoenfeld (formerly Plymouth) Theatre. It is made of buff-colored brick and terracotta and is divided into two sections: a stage house to the west and the theater's entrance to the east. The entrance is topped by fire-escape galleries and contains a curved corner facing east toward Broadway. The auditorium contains an orchestra level, a large balcony, a small technical gallery, and a flat ceiling. Near the front of the auditorium, flanking the flat proscenium arch, are box seats at balcony level.
