The musical A Chorus Line opened at the Shubert Theatre in 1975, directed by Michael Bennett. During the run of Chorus Line, the Shubert hosted Tony Awards ceremonies in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1985. Chorus Line became the longest-running Broadway show in 1983, and it became the first Broadway show to run for 5,000 performances in 1987.
Shubert Theatre was built for the Shubert brothers and is operated by The Shubert Organization. Booth Theatre is adjacent, fronting the West 45th Street. Both theaters were designed by Henry Beaumont Herts (1871-1933) in the Italian Renaissance style, with similar arrangements. The auditorium of Shubert Theatre has an orchestra level, two balconies, boxes, a stage behind the proscenium arch and 1,502 seats. The space is designed with plaster decorations in relief.
