The Castle Clinton National Monument (former Castle Garden), reopened in 1896 as the New York City Aquarium. The Pier A, erected in in 1885, is to the right.
The Battery Park was created in 1823 and contains many monuments, historic buildings and beautiful promenades. From the first European settlement, in the 17th century, to the early 19th century, this area was mainly dedicated to defense.
