Columbus Monument, Manhattan - 1903
Christopher Columbus Monument at Columbus Circle. This Columbus Monument was dedicated on October 13, 1892 and was part of the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' landing in America (Antilles). It is 23 meters high and was created by Italian sculptor Gaetano Russo. The pedestal features an angel holding a globe. Photograph by Detroit Publishing Co., copyrighted 1903. Several people from across the United States contributed to funding the monument. The funds were raised by Il Progresso, an Italian-language newspaper based in New York.
