This historic City Hall building was constructed from 1803 to 1812 on the site of the old Poor House, demolished in 1897. The City Hall Park was back then "the Fields". The original copper roof of City Hall was replaced in 1853, but it was destroyed by fire in 1858. The domed clock tower was rebuilt in 1917 (enlargement below). The Nathan Hale monument (enlargement below), dedicated in 1893, is in its old location in front of the City Hall. Today the City Hall is a living museum, designated a national historic landmark in 1960.
