This was a time when the area around Times Square was growing rapidly and cityscape changed dramatically. Many large buildings were erected in the area in the early 20th century, Times Building (today One Times Square) being the tallest in the area. The Subway Times Station also opened in 1904. The old 7-story Rossmore Hotel on the west side Broadway opened in 1876. Broadway Theatre, on the right, opened in 1888. The big Astor Hotel, seen in the distance, between 44th Street and 45th Street, opened on September 9, 1904.

This is about the same view a few years before, during Subway construction, when Pabst Hotel was on the site of Times Building.
