Waldorf Hotel, 33rd Street and Fifth Avenue - between 1893 and 1896
The old Waldorf Hotel on the northwest corner of Fifth Avenue and Thirty-Third Street. Photograph taken J.S. Johnston, between 1893 and 1896. Built by William Astor on the site of his father’s mansion and beside his aunt Caroline Webster Schermerhorn Astor’s home (the side wall of Mrs. Astor's house is visible on right). The Astoria Hotel was constructed next to it and completed in 1897. The hotel was torn down in 1929 to make way for the Empire State Building.
