The luxury hotel opened in 1859 and was home of great number of important events. It was closely connected with New York history. It closed at midnight on April 4, 1908. The furniture and equipment were auctioned on April 7, by the proprietors Hitchcock, Darling & Co. The store of Knox the Hatter in the ground floor was still open in May 1908, after demolition work began on the building, a few weeks before.
The Fifth Avenue Building (200 Fifth Avenue), was completed in 1909 on the site. The Flatiron Building completed in 1902 is on the left, at the junction of Broadway and 5th Avenue.
141 Fifth Avenue, 15 stories, completed in 1897 at the southeast corner of 21st Street.
