Original title: The New Hoffman House, Madison Square. Engraving published in a card about the hotel. Additional text: Absolutely fire proof. J.P. Caddagan, Manager. Source: New York Public Library.

The cityscape depicted is about the late 19th century, after 1896. Four buildings are represented here, on Broadway and West 25th Street, seen from 5th Avenue. Worth Monument is in the foreground. Albemarle Hotel, opened in 1860, is on the left, corner of 24th Street, facing Madison Square. Hoffman House comprised three buildings in this view. The original Hoffman House, opened in 1864, is in the center, on Broadway. The Moorish annex on the right, corner of 25th Street, was completed in the late 1895 or early 1896. The second annex on 25th Street, behind the tree, was completed about 1885. Hoffman House also included two houses on West 24th Street, added in 1869. J. P. Caddagan replaced Edward S. Stokes, as the hotel manager, in 1896.
