Nassau Street Post Office

Nassau Street, looking north from near Pine Street, towards the old Post Office. Composition of three photographs (two stereoscopic views), dated 1865 by the NYPL. Source: photography collection, New York Public Library.

This old Post Office was established in 1845 in the premises that formerly housed the Middle Dutch Church on the city block bounded by Liberty Street (tower side), Nassau St. (lateral) and Cedar Street (rear and box delivery side). The temple was originally completed in 1731, altered in 1764, leased in 1844 to the U.S. Government, which bought the property in 1860. The property was sold in October 1882 and the building was demolished in the same year.

Signs of the Morris Fire & Inland Insurance Company, on the stairs, on the left. The Fisk & Hatch Bankers is seen at 5 Nassau Street. This firm was established in 1862. The Delaware & Hudson Canal Co. is above, in the same building.
