Park Row and World Building - 1868
This is the old "Newspaper Row", as this section of Park Row was called at the time. The Printing House Square, bounded by Park Row, Spruce and Nassau streets, is to the right. City Hall Park is to the left. The Sun and the French's Hotel can be seen in the distance, both on opposite corners of Frankfort Street. The French's Hotel was demolished in 1888 to make way for a new World Building, an early skyscraper.
The old World Building, corner of Beekman Street, was erected in 1857 and destroyed by fire in 1882. The two large signs of The Manufacturer & Builder did not exist. It was actually just a small sign of the journal on the Park Row front and Some signs from other companies were not represented. The old New York Times building (with the triangular roof ornament) was completed in 1858 at 41 Park Row. Both buildings were constructed on the site of the old Brick Church, demolished in 1857.
