Wall Street in 1847

Original title: Wall Street, N.Y. 1847. Street scene on Wall Street, west of William Street, in the nineteenth century, showing Trinity Church in the background and horse drawn carriages. Illustration drawn from nature by German artist Augustus Köllner (1813-1906). Lith. by Laurent Deroy (1797-1886). Additional printed texts: Vermilye & Co / Courtesy of MacKay & Co. Public gas lamps are on the sidewalks. The first franchise for supplying the City of New York with gas was granted in 1823. The Bank of New York is on the northeast corner of William Street, on the extreme right. The neoclassical Bank of America Building, on the northwest corner of William Street, is on the right. It was demolished in 1888 to make way for a new Bank of America Building.
