Southern Manhattan Island - 1951

Aerial photo of the Southern Tip of Manhattan Island, in New York City, looking south towards the Upper New York Bay. Photograph dated July 6 1951. Source: New York State Archives.

Residential buildings are under construction in the foreground in the Two Bridged area. The two tallest skyscrapers in this view are the Forty Wall Street, completed in May 1930, when it was the tallest building in the world for about two months, and the American International Building, at 70 Pine Street, completed in 1932. The Brooklyn Bridge, over East River, is visible on the left side of the image. The South Street and its piers are also visible.
