Illustration depicts buildings on fire during the Great New York Fire of December 16-17, 1835, as seen from the Coenties Slip in New York City, with firefighters, ladders, firefighting vehicles, and cargo on the dock and men in boats in the water of the inlet amidst cargo boxes and barrels; the center building has the sign "Boston Packets." The fire burned about 17 blocks in Lower Manhattan.

The Great fire of 1835 destroyed many historic buildings, including the the first Merchant's Exchange building, completed in 1827, and the South Dutch Church, completed in 1807.
