The fire started on December 16, 1835, about nine o'clock pm, in a large warehouse at 25 Merchant Street (now Beaver Street). The old Merchants' Exchange, completed in 1827, and offices of “The Fulton Insurance Company” are burning on the right. The fire reached the dome of the Exchange about half-past one o'clock, after having raged in the vicinity for hours. The fire burned about 17 blocks in Lower Manhattan, from the night of December 16 until the afternoon of the next day.
