Broadway, South from Herald Square - 1910
Original title: Looking down Broadway from The Times Tower, New York. Source: Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division. Photograph by Thaddeus Wilkerson, NYC, published in a vintage postcard, postmark August 1910.
Photo shows buildings on both sides of Broadway from Herald Square (bottom) to East River, in the background. The 48-story Metropolitan Life Insurance Tower, seen on the left, was completed in 1909, on Madison Avenue, corner of East 24th Street. It was the world's tallest building until 1913, when it was surpassed by the Woolworth Building, on Broadway.
At the bottom, we can see the Sixth Avenue's elevated railway crossing Broadway. The Macy's Department Store, at 151 West 34th Street (right), was completed in 1902. Flatiron Building, completed in the same year, is in the distance.
