Herald Square, 34th Street and Broadway- 1936
Looking north from Herald Square, junction of Broadway and Six Avenue. Photograph taken on July 16, 1936, by Berenice Abbott (1898-1991). Source: Federal Art Project / New York Public Library.
On the left, Macy's department store, billboards on corner of West 34th Street. The elevated railroad of 6th Avenue, on the right. The New York Herald had left the site and the Herald Building was partially demolished in 1921. In this photograph we can see only the front part of the old building with signs of Rogers Peet and Simmons Tours. The other part was occupied by the Herald Square Building, completed in 1930.
