Madison Avenue at Madison Square
Madison Avenue borders Madison Square Park from East 23rd to East 26th streets. The avenue was constructed in 1836, between Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue, beginning in the East 23rd Street at Madison Square, that was formally opened as a public park in 1847.
This section of Madison Avenue has been the site of many historic structures, including the first and second venues of the Madison Square Garden, on the former site of the P.T. Barnum's Roman Hippodrome (opened in 1874), the Gothic temple of the Madison Square Presbyterian Church (on the corner of East 24th Street, completed in 1854), the neoclassical temple of the same church (dedicated in 1906), the Leonard W. Jerome Mansion (completed in 1865), the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Building, the New York Life Insurance Company Building (between and 26th and 27th streets, completed in 1928), the Madison Square Hotel, Appellate Division Courthouse of New York State, the 20-story Madison Avenue Building (built in 1912 and demolished in the 1930s) and others.
