The cornerstone of the Times Building was laid on January 18, 1904 and the building was completed at the end of the same year. The subway and its Times Station were also under construction and the first line was opened on October 27 of that year, when the square had already been named after the building.
The New York Theatre is on the left and the Rossmore Hotel, opened in 1876, is behind Times Building, between 41st and 42nd streets. The old Victoria Theatre (Hammerstein's), on the northwest corner of Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street, is on the right. The four-story Barrington Apartments is between 43rd and 44th streets.
Two year before, other triangular-shaped skyscraper was completed in a junction of two thoroughfares: the Flatiron at Fifth Avenue and Broadway.
