Foot of Wall Street - 1889

 

The Wall Street Ferry, in the background, opened in May 1853, linking Manhattan and Brooklyn at Montague Street. It was expanded and gained side towers around 1880. The ferry closed in 1912.

The centennial celebration of the inauguration of George Washington, on April 29, 1889. Photograph by the Brooklyn Academy of Photography, published in the History of the Centennial Celebration of the Inauguration of George Washington as First President of the United States by Clarence Winthrop Bowen (1852-1935), published in 1892 by a committee of citizens of the City of New York, whose active work began on November 10, 1887. Photo shows carriages containing the plan, scope Committee and the 23rd President of the United States, Benjamin Harrison, leaving the Foot of Wall Street for the reception at the Equitable Building.
