Broadway, New York City about 1835

Illustration showing Broadway, looking south from City Hall Park. St. Paul's Chapel is on the right and Trinity Church is in the distance. Engraved by Samuel Davenport (1783–1867) and published in London by Thomas Kelly (ca. 1795-ca. 1841). Source: New York Public Library. About the same buildings are shown in the Panorama of New York City by Robert Burford, published in 1834.

The first franchise for supplying the City of New York with gas was granted in 1823. Awnings were in front of nearly every store and their iron or wooden supports dotted the curb, separated by an occasional tree or front stoop from some lingering dwelling house.

Below, enlargement of buildings in Lower Broadway, including the second temple of Trinity Church, the old Grace Church and the six-story Adelphi Hotel, in Bowling Green.
