At the time of its opening on May 24, 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was the longest spanning bridge in the world. It represents the culmination of nearly a lifetime's experience designing and building suspension structures conceived by John A. Roebling. This system became the standard for suspension bridges throughout the world. The old trolley tracks closed in March 1950 to allow for the widening of the bridge.
