Brooklyn in one on the five boroughs of New York City, coextensive with Kings county, the most populous county in the State of New York. Coney Island, an entertainment area and vacation destination in the southwestern section of Brooklyn. It was originally the westernmost of the Outer Barrier islands on the southern shore of Long Island, but in the early 20th century it became a peninsula, connected to the rest of Long Island by land fill. Coney Island has been featured in many novels, films, television shows, cartoons, and theatrical plays. Photo by Julienne Schaer/NYC Tourism + Conventions.
Brooklyn Heights in the winter. It is a residential neighborhood, originally referred to as Brooklyn Village. It is noted for its low-rise architecture and its many brownstone rowhouses, most of them built in the 19th century. In 1965, a large part of Brooklyn Heights was protected by the creation of the Brooklyn Heights Historic District (photo credit: Julienne Schaer / NYC & Company).
