Brooklyn seen from Manhattan - 1853

 

Original title: Brooklyn, L.I. [Long Island] as seen from Trinity Church, New York. Print shows piers and the dock area of the "Wall Street Ferry", looking from Trinity Church across the East River toward Brooklyn. Many ships are at dock, also shows many carts and wagons, pedestrians, and carriages leaving the ferry terminal. At the time, Trinity Church spire was the tallest structure in New York.

Painted by John William Hill. Lithographer: Benjamin F. Smith (1830-1927). Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1853, by George Warren Smith in the Clerks Office of the district Court of the Southern district of N.Y. John William Hill (1812-1879) was born in Great-Britain and became a prolific painter of New York views. Source: Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.

The spires of Trinity Church was the tallest structure in New York until 1888, when it was surpassed by the spires of the St. Patrick's Cathedral.
