Fifth Avenue in the 19th Century at Madison Square

Madison Square was formally opened as a public park in 1847. Fifth Avenue crosses the western part of the square, from 23rd Street to 26th Street, where it also intersects Broadway, from the Flatiron Building to the Worth Monument, dedicated in 1857. Several hotels opened at this junction of Broadway and 5th Avenue in the second half of 19th century.
