Fifth Avenue in the 19th Century at Central Park
This page contains images of Fifth Avenue in the 19th Century at Central Park, from 59th Street (Central Park South) to 110th Street (Central Park North).
Central Park was envisioned in the 1840s. The City began to acquire the lands from 1847 to 1852. The Park first opened for public use in 1859 and officially opened in 1876. In the late 19th century, the east side of 5th Avenue, that runs along the park, was a place of several residential mansions and cultural institutions. At the time, hotels and apartment houses began to replace the mansions.
