Fifth Avenue in the 20th Century
This page shows vintage images of Fifth Avenue from Madison Square, at 26th Street, to 59th Street (Central Park South) and the Grand Army Plaza, located near the Central Park's southeast entrance, the Scholar's Gate.
The midtown blocks between 34th and 59th streets were mostly a residential area until the beginning of the 20th century, then many buildings were converted into stores and offices.
This section of Fifth Avenue, in Midtown Manhattan is home to famous skyscrapers, including the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center. The Empire State Building, completed in 1931 on the west side of Fifth Avenue, between West 33rd and 34th streets, replaced the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
