In 1775, thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic coast of North America started a war of independence against Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776. Peace treaty was signed in Paris on September 3, 1783, ending the War of the American Revolution. Based on a 1782 preliminary treaty, the agreement recognized U.S. independence and granted the U.S. significant western territory.
