Saint Mark's Church in-the-Bowery - 1913

 

St. Mark's-in-the-Bowery Church, 2nd Ave. & 11th Street. The 2nd oldest church edifice in Manhattan. Erected between 1795 and 1799. Steeple added 1829 and an An Italianate cast-iron portico was added in 1854. It is the oldest site still occupied by a church in Manhattan. Designated a New York City landmark in 1966. A restoration project was begun in 1975.

Note: it is assumed here that this photograph was taken in 1913, being part of the Frank Cousins Collection / NYC. In 1913, Frank Cousins was hired by the Public Design Commission to document more than 50 buildings considered to be in danger of imminent demolition.
